Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 17, 2026
GMail Hilite does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data on any server. All data stays on your device.
What the extension does
GMail Hilite reads your Gmail inbox to identify email attributes (starred status, read/unread state, labels, and sender address) and applies background and text color highlights to inbox rows based on rules you configure. This processing happens entirely within your browser.
Data we collect
We collect nothing. Specifically:
- No email content is read or stored
- No sender names or email addresses are stored or transmitted
- No browsing history is recorded
- No analytics or telemetry are collected
- No third-party tracking scripts are included
Your settings
The highlight rules and colors you configure are saved using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.sync API. This means:
- Your settings are stored locally in your Chrome profile
- Chrome may sync them across your own signed-in devices via your Google account — this sync is handled entirely by Google/Chrome, not by this extension
- Your settings never leave your devices via this extension
Permissions
The extension requests two permissions:
- storage — to save your highlight rule preferences locally
- host access to mail.google.com — to read inbox row attributes (starred, unread, labels) and apply highlight styles
Neither permission is used to collect or transmit data.
Third-party services
GMail Hilite does not use any third-party services, APIs, or analytics platforms.
